Presenting Christmas
It took about 30 seconds of the opening credits - slightly blurry, music hall, dancing girls and war motifs - before Clare and I turned to each other and said 'I love it already'. Yes step forward Mrs Henderson Presents. It's very likely that the formidable combination of Dame Judi, swear words, British eccentricity, the second world war, London and vaudeville may be one of my very favourite things - consequently it was a done deal. It may be hearing silly songs and innuendo, it may just be a lovely (loosely based on true facts) story on a cold Sunday evening is a perfect combination. Or it may just be that I, indeed we, both really enjoyed it. Whatever the reasons, we left humming tunes, wiping the obligatory tear and doing a little shuffle stage left out of the cinema.
I may or may not have also practiced nude standing still as a tableau in front of the bathroom mirror this morning as a consequence.
My apologies in advance for the mental image. It's not as bad as it could be.
This weekend also saw my first tentative steps towards creating a Christmas wonderland. A few precarious minutes on the balcony on a step-ladder, much threading of wiring and a flick of the switch and ta-dah we have lights on the balcony. Lovely cascading snowflakes that, with enough wattage, you'll be able to see all over well E2. Look up and wave hello.
It's going to be the first time I've actually done Christmas in my own home. Even when I had my own place in Australia I could never be bothered. Christmas morning was always wrapping presents with a hangover (this was not a bad thing) then I'd jump in the car and trail round to Ma's place for lunch with the rest of the family. Usually in baking heat then, well I'll bore you with our Christmas traditions in another post. In the meantime I am finally being a grown-up and going to get a tree, decorations and give the sitting room a particular Christmas spin. I'm really quite excited about it.
Who's for egg-nog then?
