KnitWit
I've always been a bit partial to remedial activities. Cross-stitch and jigsaws spring to mind. I like that you can absolutely lose yourself in a little project. Jigsaws, especially, are strangely addictive, however last night I was introduced to the delights of Knitting in Public. Now I know this little phenomenon has been around for a while but I've resisted the urge. Mainly I think because my mum isn't here to cast on for me, fix dropped stitches and cast off which is what she had to do when I was 12. I sat quietly around a table in a small deli with other (much more) like minded souls as they knitted. I was a little shy, it had been many many years since I'd picked up needles and though I knew I could probably get a knit stitch going if forced I couldn't begin just yet. A bottle of hemp beer later and very studious perusing of knitting magzines and books and I leant quietly over to Emma (who had invited me along) and said "Will you start one off for me".
Turns out I can do a straight knit, no probs, can just about manage a purl and only dropped two stitches which I repaired by myself, badly. Still it was strangely enjoyable and I left inspired and keen to go back next week with my own ball of wool and needles. Watch out, I may be knitting a lot of scarves this Christmas.
