Recovery and Restitution

So I recovered from my hangover with the tried and tested hair of the dog. Arrived at the pub saying it was very unlikely I'd stay long and that if I hadn't had a seat I would probably have left straightaway.

Fast forward to 3am and I'm standing in the Kebab shop on the corner ordering a 'chicken roll' which turns out to be a soggy bun that I am trying very hard not to recall because it was gross.

There's a lesson to us all in there somewhere.

Nunc est Bibendum

In a fit of pretentiousness years ago I adopted the above Latin as my motto.

Interestingly I have been doing a bit of an about face on that fact and am now enjoying and contemplating a life of relative sobriety. Relative to my own normal behaviour that is.

August was 'drink less month' and drink less I have. It's been a curious experiment and one that hasn't resulted in the dramatic weight loss I'd hoped but one that has given a kind of clarity to my intentions and purpose to my activities. I am at last embarking or in many cases, finishing, projects and acitivies long planned for the flat. Looking at the current state of it you would not think, it being in a complete state of dis-array but progress has been made and jobs are being completed.

I find myself waking up after an evening drinking (and this for example on Friday night - in the company of two others - included sharing 2 bottles of wine and having two pints), not excessive but not nothing - feeling somewhat remorseful and regretful at the post-drinking emotions that overcome me. What used to be just a sense of dehydration and exhaustion now are clouded by feelings of guilt and regret. I have to remind myself that drinking can be fun and that the enjoyment thereof is not a bad thing. The fact I am containing it relatively successfully should be celebrated and I shouldn't feel bad for succumbing. It was, after all, a Friday night.

These are the days of (relative) sobriety. If nothing else I'll have a tidy flat and a project free environment. That is something to be enjoyed.
