Bowling the maiden over
Cricket's a funny old thing isn't it. I mean, I really like it. I imagine it's a legacy of growing up in Australia in the early days of one day internationals and long hot summers of tests.
I've never really supported Australia. I think the last time I did, Kim Hughes was captain. Somewhere in my mid-teens a girlfriend and I decided to support Pakistan and England. She harboured a crush on Javed Miandad. Google him then wonder why. I just liked the international teams better. It also meant getting tickets for test matches and one day games between Pakistan and England was a lot easier than any match Australia played in.
My dad, being the talented all round sportsman he is, used to play cricket (and football, golf, bowls and tennis or whatever was in season) at weekends. Karen and I would be left to roam the park with the other kids and play our own versions. Well I wouldn't play. My wonky eye and natural un-coordination meant I was not much use at anything except cheer leader.
Anyway back to the cricket. Day one of the test at Lords today. I really do wish I was there. It's a terrific day out, though I get that it's not everyones cup of tea. I'd be cheering that that utter twat Shane Warne doesn't get any wickets, is sledged till he blows his top and is out for a duck.
It's also a funny old game because it's just odd. Fancy having to wear that kit, strapping on shin pads, bollocks protectors, face helmets and thigh pads because somebody is going to throw a bloody hard ball right at you at up to 100mph. Then because you've got all this kit on they then expect you to start running up and down a pitch clutching a rather large bat whilst someone else might also try to chuck a ball at you.
It's for all those reasons and the aforementioned wonky eye and un-coordination that I never took it up myself.
Funny that.
