6 Degrees of separation

Sometimes it is fortunate to have an unusual and long surname. For example at school, definitely a hindrance. Researching a family tree? Bonus!

I've got a little spreadsheet and a mocked up family tree slowly evolving and when the mood takes me I do a little internet search.

Today's goldmine discovery:

My great, great, great grandfather (note, that isn't that many 'greats') fought in the Battle of Trafalgar.

James served in the navy for 22 odd years before retiring to Portsmouth to marry. This begins to explain why there aren't that many generations between me and Lord Nelson..... six degrees and all.

James had his youngest son (also named James) at the age of 46, James Jr had his son Percy at the age of 36, Percy had my grandfather at 44, my grandfather was a relative youngster having my dad at the age of 29 and my Dad was a slightly bemused 25 year old when I came screaming, fat, bald and cross-eyed into the world.

The British Fleet going into battle. James was on the HMS Phoebe.
You'll note it was hardly leading the way, but to be fair, it was a frigate.
One presumes carrying supplies. I could be wrong.

The fact that both James Snr and Jnr became publicans is no way reflected in my appreciation of the London pub culture. Oh no sir.
