Film & Television

Film update. I am not doing too well on New Year resolution number 4. Last night I saw only my second film of the year, Garden State. It was the second best thing I've seen all year. We wanted to see Vera Drake or Closer but thanks to the Orange Wednesdays promotion queues down the street ensued. Grrr. Garden State was a good film, some amusing asides, nicely crafted characters, good dialogue and a nice little soundtrack (you're waiting for the but....) but I can't say I loved it because well, I didn't. And I've been thinking why I didn't and I think it's simply that it's a subtle film that doesn't tug hard on any of the old heartstrings, doesn't make one fall about laughing (though few things do for me) or doesn't make you feel anything strong. So whilst it's very nicely done, the subtlety underwhelms it for me.

The upshot of the debacle surrounding trying to find a film thanks to Orange, was that I discovered how to use the WAP facility on my mobile phone. Hurrah. It helped us locate a time and place to see Garden State and find that Lisa I'Anson had been booted out on Celebrity Big Brother. I've stopped watching CBB but am keeping abreast of what is going on by dropping into the website from time to time. Caprice will be next to go, mark my words. I am disappointed however that visitors to this blog are picking Jeremy to win. How dull. Jeremy, not any visitors I hasten to add.

As most people know I'm a big fan of crime dramas. Well not a big fan, I have my limits, limits which don't include Inspector Frost, Taggart or Midsomer Murders bizarrely but do include Cracker, Morse and pretty much anything Lynda La Plante does. Fortunately for me then the last few weeks have featured new episodes of The Commander. Watching the show earlier this week I was struck that everytime a crime scene was visited in The Commander, starring TV's Amanda Burton as the eponymous hero I kept waiting for Amanda Burton as TV's Sam Ryan from Silent Witness to show up. Surprisingly she never did. Instead she did a lot of long lingering looks (quelle surprise) which were thoroughly impenetrable, whilst wearing a very unflattering police uniform.

Lynda La Plante does do good TV, though this is perhaps has been my least favourite. Which consequently begs the questions, what are the favourites? Well my favourite has been The Governor followed very very closely by Prime Suspect with the rather fabulous Widows coming a respectable third. So now you know.

It might be that time of year but I've either read articles or had conversations with assorted people who have decided they hate tv and 'don't like to be told what to do or watch' or 'there's only crap on tv' well stop me if I'm wrong but isn't it you who decides what you watch or don't watch? It's called free will and coupled with a remote, the tv is at your control.

Muppets.

Plus it's a wholly unoriginal opinion and strikes me as bandwagon jumping and weak. By joining in the debate I feel slightly soiled now.

Speaking of television *looks up* Hmm nothing but today..... I am loving the credits for Desperate Housewives.

Comments:
I've been glued to repeats of Between the Lines lately. It bears up to repeated viewing even though it must be 10 years old at least. The only thing that dates it is the way every single character has a fag in their hand in every scene.
